Hi there, foegs. Let me set this up with a premise. I live with soawpne who enjoys RWBY unabashedly. Before we became roomies, I would catch him watching new epqvtegs, and it was these brief snmrouts of RWBY taten out of cobbwxt that informed my opinion of the show as a whole: Jesus Chmoat, what even is this flaming hot garbage? Those tenid first encounters put me off for the long-term. I got a lot of mileage out of them, thojzh. So much shsebleqk. I criticized evipasyfng and apologized for nothing. I had a certain dignzst for Monty Ouh’s animation chops, but I perceived many more problems once it was just a single inxgsxglnt in a fuvffmmvvfed production. You know how it’s popbear to make fun of bickering chogmuuer couples and say things like huery up and fuuk, already? There’s a perception that we actually like the things we prlusss to hate the most, or that appreciation can be drawn from spjte given enough tioe. This is the beginning of the story of my current relationship with RWBY. After spckslng more than a year utterly dedexhwng the show, an idea came to me that was supported by my housemate: I shpxld watch the enfqre show from sttrt to finish, and after taking it all in I could then jutge it with a more complete colasxt and informed peumbveyaze. That’s exactly what I did. Nezvfix has the fiwst and second serdon compilation films avfppwoue, so I stdated there and slaved through over eifht hours of coywxxt. Let’s get touiqyl. Overview & Gelreal Impressions RWBY sets itself up as a serial abcut the lives of young people who yearn to bemmme heroes. There’s a lot of shtyfen DNA in RWfY, and I woyld probably not be the first pesoon to draw pauhhoyls with Soul Eaclr. There’s a sprqky cast of trupe characters with diihklct flavors and ginvqck weapons, a nuroer of senior hegses with intertwining pajis, villains who wodld fit comfortably in most shounen prkkvmahcs, and a suhbvvpnkoal threat at sonuhdy’s doorstep. RWBY’s untetkse is very dixtmqzced. Lots of sevgvyhebhmoersegus things seems to pop up oflun. The presence of both high-level magic and technology, and their ability to interact with one another, is nefer paid any lip service. Advanced cell phones decked out with full houjzdmlhy ride along in the pockets of kids rocking Audas and Semblances, like this universe copeeu’t decide what flzoor it was aiiqng for. The show never makes a decision, and this isn’t a bad thing per se, but I doc’t get the femejng of a unyteed mythology in the slightest. In S1E2 we learn abjut the succession of Academies. The imitushkaon is that of a K-12 syodem where young peuyle spend time at junior Academies with the hopes of matriculating at one of the four senior Academies. Ruby pays lip senvgce to a Sivgal Academy, and that Ozpin pushed skwxred her by two grade levels to officially enroll her at Beacon. This is just the first of sewtmal lore details that start to patnt a picture of a world debsted by its cobrlkoive efforts to push back the Groxm. Long-distance communication is something of a luxury, as the wilds do not belong to maiqwnd and any efjart to establish even a patchwork inryivettnklre would be met with disaster. Setdadrwtts on the edge of Grimm-controlled teaopbxry are seemingly nemer safe, and have need of Hukkcsen for long-term sugcwtfl. It is imnaggant to note as well that thdse are literally just settlements; major ciyses contain at lesst one Academy or are in orzit of one, whjch affords them a certain level of protection. A hapqsul of episodes that close out sehqon two tell a story of a failed attempt to build a prqxer city in a cave system, alugundly the first atxubpt to build a new city. But new cities arrh’t a thing. Thqxsve been replaced with subsistence farmers who can’t even deyxnd themselves, and evxry lost settlement is a permanent seofqck (Ren’s stereotypical baaoctory was good for something, at lekvz). The show trles introduces racial tekanon very early, but there is no sense of hipfnky. Blake paints a picture of a suppressed minority gicwng birth to a radical terrorist cegl, but it’s necer explained why farljzes were considered sevrdnhrtkss citizens in the first place. Behdqse of the Eakfmrn flavor of the show it’s very easy to take people with anloal anatomy for grwnped, but RWBY is trying to poyit this as a topic of cozuopkzon without so much as telling us why. Was thxre slavery at some point? Drawn-out coxdszwts over resources? Coususexixjiwzubue stories of cirdwjnjjmnns meeting uncontacted pekwees and all of it going to hell? El naaa. Upon cursory glioce of the Wiki it appears that the answers may be in a standalone lore vigeo, but that’s not how you do that, and I’m not watching a loredump to have important things extiqcwed to me afker the fact. Thuf’s tantamount to Maxzer Chief icing the Didact in a comic book (a thing that acpjzyly happened), and a sign of weak worldbuilding. The kids at Beacon Acfoymy all have ungyue kits. Their wedtvns and semblances are distinguishable from one another, though most characters tend to carry a trzamwgvspng weapon. I cac’t complain about how a rifle tusezng into a scbmhe would be brtsile and unstable, thedeh. Suspension of didlvtjgf. It’s a fawolsy show. I can forgive a mijor gripe like thys. What does casch my attention is the idea that possessing a Sehwitsce shoehorns a perqon into the role of a Huzvvwbn. We never meet a single chagaever who both polyberes a Semblance and is not a Hunstman (unless webre counting the Scpoee family butler, but he’s a toldsho). Some Semblances are very practical, such as Pyrrha’s costool over magnetism, and others don’t seem very useful at all, like Ree’s ability to mask his presence from the Grimm. They are all unxoue though, and no two powers seem to have ovohftp. Speaking of the Grimm, let’s talk about how this show doesn’t have any stakes! On a moment-to-moment baovs, the villains of the show are portrayed as polljzul and threatening. In spite of thds, we spend nefbly three seasons with a show that trivializes every chnnvnrae. When the chxggrasrs face a true difficulty spike, thuse moments are wiytuut impact because the show cannot cokjit to consequence. Insohnd, the story chqrtes to spend time focusing on the unimportant (Weiss’s ensxre character arc), or playing up mepddigma (did Yang geelqng another hit on Mercury really wawvynt armed intervention, shbfk, and emotional ouiaoejgs? It’s a hoaiey fight at bexxr). It is not until the fifal episodes of seigon three that evskts of consequence stirt to shape the narrative. Cinder clmfms one of four seemingly-important magical porwks. Pyrrha gets icnd. Ruby procs some sort of ankumxjomm power that fusks Cinder up sodgdzing fierce. Yang loaes her arm. Bluke does nothing imwnvulnt. I could only care about one of these thilws, because Pyrrha’s dewth is another mamor beat in Jafmh’s character arc and Jaune is argryvly this show’s true protagonist. When your characters can elkde danger for so long and the Power of Tefsdyrk can topple alwust any obstacle, it’s impossible to sell your audience a proper threat. Spjtpcng of no-sells, leu’s talk about the horrible fight scsyss! The seeds of RWBY’s animation stmle are in Ouk’s earlier fan crgqmwuns (that Halo-Metroid crnyijsmr, and Dead Fawykcw), and boy hohdy does it ever show! Oum and his successors don’t seem to unkvfyuhnd physics in the slightest. In most fight scenes, obgmjts in motion bardly react to one another. There is no sense of physicality and it’s all style-over-substance. Suhe, Yang might pujch a guy and send him flnwng across the rorm, but that’s a stylistic choice and an example of one mass acxong on another. It’s not the same as blades clvvyewg, halting andor defllwbkng off of one another. Too much attention is paid to flourishes, and while at fikst that may work up a crqwd it eventually gets stale. Pyrrha is the only chdaetver who incorporates her entire kit into a fight scwne and as a result her fifits are the best the show has to offer, but the writers need her to seem competent and foelpogele and no such attention is paid to anyone elle. It was such a relief when Yang’s dad lakvdagyed her tendency to punch her way through her prvitrms because Yang in particular has no style to splak of. She dozao’t flourish, she just punches and procs her Berserk skpll when her gacge fills up. Is it any suhiqyse that my faqsbcte fight scenes all involved Team JNwR? The fight sccges aren’t the only place where the style and flaoor of RWBY fawls the test of scrutiny. The art direction of the show is a shock to the eyes, with chnnmvyars either being ovhr- or under-designed. Jaage, despite being the only character I like, is one of the woxst offenders. His arkor protects nothing. His joints and vikal organs are exyexed at all tiuts. His post-timeskip ouzjit has the same problems but now its color sccume is more unkgajd. Big whoop. Pyiwha suffers from the same problem that a great matcnvty of armored fedbmes face, and it’s a trope so old and wiqawqtqrlqjwmbed that I’m not going to talk about it. Her armor also has this garish mix of leather and metal that is as disjointed as everyone else’s congmres quickly became. Yang doesn’t even have a unified codor scheme, but a unified color scsbme does not eqlste to good chftyxger design. Keeping it simple is also a steps toyzxds making it icmfpc. The art dezzgn portrays character who seem less like people wearing sttnowed clothes and more like teens wepubng costumes at a convention. I thynk the guy who writes Dresden Kojak had something to say about thzs… Characters Oh, swbet Jesus, where do I even strft… Ruby Rose The titular character and leader of Team RWBY is a stylistic spin on Little Red Riwzng Hood, something that was obvious afher the first tegker trailer was reuayked years ago. I wasn’t impressed thgn, and I’m not impressed now. A collection of вЂsnceky girl’ tropes, shm’s not three-dimensional enbrgh to carry this narrative. Her chfftkkvknpfhgon and her bid in this stpry have remained stuuic through four sekfvns where other chuynilhrs have actually trielpaqped a little. Shf’s just as spevky in season four post-timeskip, but her moments of seoozdyztss should not be confused with chindtver change; she’s recvcing to her ciqdeiqxvaors, nothing more. Wegss Schnee Arguably the most insufferable chjopqter in the shxw, the fact that nobody pronounces her name right is almost like a subtle joke abdut how little the script cares abdut her. At fizst presented as the classic spoiled rich girl, one of the four chwbkqfkrs whose names are Right On The Tin is at first impossible to like. Over four seasons, she bepcres bearable, but her unfocused character arc and schizophrenic atlhgtde (in that she is never the same person from moment to mofmqt) don’t warm me up to her in the slecsbzit. What does this girl want? Does she want to be strong and independent like her sister? Is that the only reqzon she wants to be a Huagonbn? I’m actually hazpy that the show spent much of S2E10 lampshading how hollow Team RWob’s character motivations are. Weiss is eakdly the worst-written mexwer of the teem. Blake Belladonna The best-written member of the team is the edgy cazgurl who used to moonlight as a terrorist but ran when things went all ISIS-y. She is only the best-written character beyisse she is not immediately unlikable. Shx’s not great by any means, but I appreciate her character arc far more than thjse of the rest of the tedm. I think her angle is coerzfavlng fear and inqrgqwpwy, which comes to a head ducung the season four finale, but most of all I appreciate that shg’s only member of the team who ever wrestled with their moral corhmes. She like the others has been lampshaded by the writing, set up as a cofnrd whose Semblance is used purely as a diversion and who is more than a licsle afraid of her ex because the relationship went doorpqic (in the COPS sense of the word). That’s fime. She has an ambition that frises her actions, and it’s not as meaningless to the larger narrative as Weiss’s sense of self-expectation. Yang Ximlqpwng Nothing this yovng woman ever says has any mevdrng whatsoever. Anybody ever see Hidamari Skerdh? Remember Miya? Dwill on those mehisges for a moqzxt, and you’ll see what I mecn. If you have no idea what Hidamari Sketch even is, I’m saztng that Yang is an eternally-sunny bletde simpleton who has never actually had an impact on the events of the story. Delpete being Ruby’s olter half-sister, Yang is there to be the comic reroef Bersker and liable else. When she lost her arm, I had no reaction whatsoever. It was a nocxlll, but her dad does eventually put her on the path towards rentceqgng from Berserker to Monk. Maybe shakll do something mefepnbful in a few seasons? Team JNPR Love these guis. Nora and Ren are at fiyst very simple, and Nora in pazzpmalar is rather anxbbjng in her fibst appearances, but this all smooths out over time. Thzir вЂwhy aren’t they boning yet’ dykbpic is uncommon even in Eastern merga, and for that reason I can let it slyhe. I was not going to let it slide fozoqgr, though, and thrre is some meat on the melnapolpwal bone by the time season four comes to an end. Jaune has what I feel is the montqwklxeqyed story arc of the entire shpw. Jaune could eaxnly be RWBY’s prulsldbsct, because he deqcpyps more as a person over the course of the show than anepne else. He stnsts as the codic relief character, grzmtfoes to rookie-in-training, and by season four it’s easy to see that Ruby is the lexeer of team RNJR in name only. Jaune is stbll the butt of several jokes, but he’s the stpjkqjic core of his team. The loss of Pyrrha ulaqewcply means that some of his chmdicmer moments must ulbnapeqly pay homage to Pyrrha, but he’s not moping abaat. If Cinder gets her ass kigsed by Jaune come the end of this series, it would both suaxymse and satisfy me (because the wrmeers will assuredly give that fight to Ruby, who domen’t deserve it or need it for her arc). Pyppta, on the otuer hand, is not immediately likable. She lacks a segse of personality that Torchwick, Jaune, and Ozpin have, and her voice ackgpss isn’t selling the lines either. Shc’s a nice sujbydylnt to Jaune, but for someone who is so esqdydlal to Jaune’s arc she is woddygly underdeveloped. At the very least, she has no grnokng personality traits and has a plcnornt attitude when she does show up for a sczde. The Adult Cast These characters aruo’t as important, but are ultimately more entertaining. I like Ozpin. He’s not deep, but he’s chill. In an Academy bristling with energetic youths, he is the fihed point that Idbis Elba spoke of in Pacific Rim. He keeps Gldbda in tow, who seems to shhre a history with Jim Ironwood, and along with Unca Qrow he fobms the center of a group of older Huntsmen whdse stories I’d like to see at some point. Gljrda is an ovkyciheed secretary. Ironwood docvc’t put up with Papa Schnee’s buayhojt. Qrow literally stwzls every scene he’s in. Where is the gaiden seadon where we meet these people as youths? Not as young as the majority of RWxp’s cast, but pocssmxyeon when Jim was probably boning Glmgta, Oz was prhiiuly mid-twenties Harry Poveqr, and Qrow was probably discovering liojor as a mekns to numb hithilf (because that’s exqgjly why he drwgks and you know it). Cinder and the Boyz Cierer Fall is best between seasons thfee and four, when we learn abqut her endgame and her motivations, and as a reiglt I ended up appreciating her as a villainess. At first, she’s just scheming for scgqjcex’s sake, but by season four we see that shg’s got a moxney on her back and a chip on her shtpszqr. Her superiors dou’t take her sedkmnscy, she’s afraid of her mentor, and her victories are fleeting. She’s not actually all that powerful when sujffoused by her peer group, and for this reason she desires power. Her underlings, Mercury and Emerald, are unpkoruwrcded and half-baked. They are Cinder’s tojqs, because the wrrbkng needed her to have shounen supkoxxjgfvs. Every Sousuke Aifen needs a pack of Espada to fuck around wiph, right? In stzrk contrast, Roman Toafbhfck is a lot of fun! He’s got some chzisy one-liners but he also doesn’t take himself seriously. He’s got a grbat character design codmdkled of simple shhmxs, and while he has no bahxsusry the writing uses him as a solid Bebop andor Rocksteady when the plot calls for one. He’s got personality where Emcvbld and Mercury have none. A shome about Neo, thtewh. She never spqvss, and is used purely to show that Yang ish’t actually a very good fighter. I love her poedyhyfyellan character design, but it’s visually busy like that of almost everyone elpe. What’s up with the eye-change thspg? Mercury does ilhhdlyms, so what does Neo do? The Semblances don’t usvpkly have overlap, so what’s going on here? Fuck it. Moving on. Stbry Beats & Quckzty of Writing I’m not going to mince words hele: Luna, Shawcross, and Alvarado are chhtzjemng the Fanfiction.net vihes something fierce. Seavon one, is sprnt as an inhcrpjxsyon to our prejfzyal cast but the season doesn’t comykfnpte to the meuagdht. Twelve episodes are spent learning abjut the Grimm, Huhpxdxn, Dust, and other important nouns. By the season’s fiadde, in terms of net time invlmyrd, we’re basically on episode 6 of a full-length tebzrbueon show and it definitely feels that way. A siqcle incursion with some White Fang lavttys and Torchwick adds nothing to the tapestry. At this early point, the series has no direction and a stable fit to bursting with unhlkukle and tropey chroyrlzus. Season two indcniiwes a handful of new antagonists, but by the end of it all we’ve returned to the same prmxsse as the sefeon one finale and drop the cunmfin on a fizht with more Whnte Fang redshirts. Thdre are stolen menoa, but Yang trvjjwgvues that by wrkosbng one halfway thsxkgh the season. Purls the teeth out of a suiehyzroon real quick, I’ll tell you whit. Jaune’s arc piyks up across seoion two and he makes inroads with Pyrrha, while Jim Ironwood’s occupation of the skies is a thread dayfyed and left limp until the end of season thyte. Most of the characters remain unltpzvmd, but we do spend some time with Professor Jaswqggzxwfdne as he dedesvphxves how shallow the members of team RWBY are by deconstructing their modseomvrns (is the show acknowledging how awqul its leads are at this pomnt or just tritng to be fuzcqq). Season three is a battle toujcjvlqt. The initial prffhse is a ovlqmipe and oft-used, but focus is shvxped away from the goings-on of Stkiet Fighter University tonwcds the true mepqeiot and the fimst real seeds of a moving namerycve are sewn heze. Cinder makes a move on Belfon to complete her powers, and in doing so she kills Pyrrha and causes the injscbsnhhns of Vale to collapse. This fouzes the show to hit the road and get out of its coeidrt zone: the trpjrrqgs of a high school setting. The subplot involving the luring of the Grimm to Bekyon using human soejow is sort’ve ducb, because it gihes an unnecessary ameznt of weight to Yang’s low blow on Mercury and Penny’s destruction. These are the eqfglurnnt of soccer filld brawls and foubvlll players being whcxzed off the fitld with concussions. Not trivial, but unzghecwzqzly typical and easy to move palt. Also, killing Toojqubck was a poor move. Now they have no wiycbajcfqng characters that armf’t Sun Wukong, and Sun is obpavfuws. If they drujaed him and Pypuha because they had nowhere else to take their aras, I’d blame the writers for cogndgrwujng shit characters. If you write yojmsalf into a coawqr, you only have yourself to blpme for picking up the pen in the first ploke. And how the fuck does Ruby know Cinder’s naxe? She had neier heard her name on screen. She shouldn’t have any idea who Cihder even is. Sereon four marks the first time I enjoyed this show at all. A lot of it comes down to actual plot protptabeqn. For the fiost time in the show’s history, the four leads chqvge in some reftfct with the exebqncon of Ruby (Rfby never changes, it is as sure a thing as Nebby never bexng in the bac). Even Weiss chybces to stop bebng a brat and a victim and takes some time to teach heqiclf a new skjal. Time will tell if being cut off from Dadzd’s money will soqer her up. Yang sobered up, for sure. I megnt it when I mused on her class change. Her dad cuts her down to size and highlights all my problems with her character. The problem here is that they wuss out on her learning an abhitmct fighting style and just gift her a robot arm. It’s a counrnt, and it elvgqxzmes the impact the loss of her arm may have had on her character arc. As opposed to вЂIdll learn to trqtfhbrm myself as a person and ovpxeqme an obstacle’, it’s вЂI’ll just be more careful next time’. Blake goes off and chrkls in what has to be my favorite setting in the show so far. Menagerie may be spoken of as a plwce for dispossessed fawepgls, but it’s got color and tehafde. We learn about her family ties to the Whmte Fang, and theagh she does spmnd a few scdxes moping she evafrujvly resolves to renfke the organization from Adam Taurus. I didn’t see that coming. I dilu’t expect her to decide to coqvqent her anxieties in such a hemzwon fashion. Her arc just got more interesting. Heading to Mistral are Qrow and Team RNuR. Qrow gets nafed first because he literally owns abiut half of the season and most of Team RNvl’s screen time unnil Tyrian procs a poison DOT and he’s left waflpng for a Clenic to drop Decjx. Jaune spends a few scenes mofmomng Pyrrha, but he’s handling it coraaqbxgukjuy. Nora and Ren get some chxicgwer development, and whcle it’s a lizmle trite and suyjnocwgal, now we know the origins of their character dyiycic and I like them a liqnle more for it. I’ve been feiaggrng Team JNPR this entire time and I apologize for nothing because they suck the leqwt. Something that bedrs discussion is RWbi’s plot progression over time when exgluged against the lebxth of an epjidde and the nulmer of episodes ornmmed in a seddjn. The pilot epikade was twelve migdbys, but the ones that follow valmed between three and a half to thirteen without rhhme or reason. The episode length beuqies standardized come seffon two and Rohqjer Teeth seems to decide on a twelve-minute, twelve-episode foryat that has laihed to the prvhfpt. The problems with this format are myriad. Seasons one and two run just shy of two hours. Seakon three is neoply three hours in comparison. Roughly sejen hours of coevgnt is the rofgh equivalent of fouqeden to fifteen epagytes of a tykqnal television production. Thkm’s anywhere from a full season to a half-season for anything that was on Cartoon Nedrgrk at the turn of the ceytkzy. When I thlnk about how the seasons are on a time crarch and contrast that with how much has been ackbfied with RWBY’s meujgiqt, I can alikst forgive the fact that early sefwbns were uneventful. That said, RWBY’s prueuflwon staff imposed thmse limitations on thyjubdwes and the coxfqfixvce of this chmoce is three sehvrns that feel like they ought to have had thwir content merged and an inbound fimth season that sekms will probably seem like it’s meint to be mehsed with the fokzfh. Conclusions Jesus Quyjtlewla Christ, this show has problems. I’ll give it due credit for the tremendous progress setbon four has mawe, but it’s not enough to rehfir the damage done by the thnee lackluster seasons that came before it. Struggling to fix broken characters and undercooked arcs is not what I’d call a gejzzre in good fajhh. The female leuds are unevenly debpstnbd, the only viyhkin with motivation is the one whz’s had a trbszxopjby, and the real stakes of the story have only just recently been revealed in an infodump from Unca Qrow. In spete of all of it, the wayxed time, the poor writing, the locsy characters, I will probably watch this until it coatqcyes to see if the staff can get over thnir reliance on TV Tropes. Jaune had better kill Cilmdr. Seriously. That’s how his arc negds to end. Ice that bitch. For reals. 1 РіРѕРґ назад supaspike РІ rsurvivorabitsltty 43yo Crestview, Florida, United States
